Can Sinus Infections Cause Headaches?- AFC Urgent Care

Yes, they can, sinus headaches aren’t the most common sinus infection symptoms. In fact, it’s often the case that most migraines are mistaken as sinus headaches. Why is this, though?

Our AFC Urgent Care Ooltewah team provides some helpful answers and information on sinus infections below, so keep reading!

What Is a Sinus Infection?

A sinus infection, or sinusitis, is an inflammation or swelling of the tissue that surrounds the sinuses, which are hollow spaces within the bones between the eyes, behind the cheekbones and in the forehead. They make mucus, which keeps the inside of the nose moist. That, in turn, helps protect against dust, allergens and pollutants.

When sinuses become blocked and filled with fluid, germs can grow and cause an infection. We’ve listed the most common causes of sinusitis below.

Common Sinus Infection Causes

  • A common cold
  • Allergic rhinitis, which is swelling of the lining of the nose caused by allergens
  • Nasal polyps (small growths in the lining of the nose)
  • A deviated septum, which is a shift in the nasal cavity

What Are the Signs of a Sinus Infection?

Because a sinus infection often has similar symptoms of a common cold and allergies, it can be hard to tell the difference between the three. The common cold typically builds, peaks and slowly disappears, and it usually lasts a few days to a week.

Nasal allergies usually produce mucus that is clear, while a sinus infection is often accompanied by thick, colored mucus and a fever. We’ve listed other tell-tale signs and symptoms of sinus infections below.

Common Sinus Infection Symptoms

  • Postnasal drip
  • Discolored nasal discharge (greenish in color)
  • Nasal stuffiness or congestion
  • Tenderness of the face (particularly under the eyes or at the bridge of the nose)
  • Frontal headaches
  • Pain in the teeth
  • Coughing
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Bad breath
