Why Are Omicron Breakthrough Infections Becoming More Common?- AFC Urgent Care

The CDC recently stated that COVID-19 breakthrough infections are substantially more likely now than they were before. But, why?

Read on for some helpful answers from our AFC Urgent Care Ooltewah team.

What Causes Omicron Breakthrough Infections?

Breakthrough infections are far more likely with the omicron variant than with any other previous form of the coronavirus causing COVID-19. A breakthrough infection means that a person tests positive for COVID-19 at least two weeks after becoming completely vaccinated, including receiving a booster dose when eligible.

The reason for this is that, due to its unique alterations, the omicron variant is far more transmissible than prior forms. As a result, it becomes more capable of eluding the passive immunity produced by early COVID-19 immunizations. Initial omicron symptoms can also vary, as we’ve noted below.

Common Initial Omicron Symptoms

  • Cough
  • Fatigue or tiredness
  • Congestion and runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Headache

How Can I Prevent Omicron Infection?

Although breakthrough infections can occur, the COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots are still the best protections against this extremely contagious type. In fact, in recent CDC trials, booster shots were shown to be 90& effective in preventing omicron hospitalizations, which is the ultimate goal of vaccines.

In addition to getting vaccinated and boosted, there are other health practices that can help you avoid testing positive for omicron. We’ve compiled a list of them below.

Ways to Prevent Omicron Infection

  • Wear a well-fitting N95 or KN95 mask. These offer the highest level of protection, according to the CDC.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly and often. Make sure to wash for at least 20 seconds each time to properly rid of lingering bacterial and viral particles.
  • Be smart with where you go and the events you attend. Even though physical distancing is still recommended by the CDC, not many adhere to it anymore. If you are immunocompromised, live with someone who is at high risk of becoming seriously ill or you have young children at home, you may want to be more cautious and keep your distance in public.
